Definition
The Retail Trade division forms part of the 17 ANZSIC divisions which comprise the economy (i.e. Division G). Operators in this division retail products in three main categories, food, personal and household goods and motor vehicles. These goods are purchased from domestic (and in some cases international) manufacturers and wholesalers. Operators then retail these goods, through their store, to the general public. The recent introduction of online retailing has broadened the medium of sale for operators. The majority of goods supplied by this industry are purchased by consumers for private use. Other key buyers include business and government entities. It is important to note that businesses who operate as cafes, restaurants, hotels and motels are excluded from this division. These operators are classified under Accommodation, Cafes and Restaurant (Division H). Also excluded are entities which primarily provide property and business services. These operators are classified under Property and Business Services (Division L). ANZSIC definition: This Division includes all units mainly engaged in the retail of new or used goods to final consumers for personal or household consumption or in selected repair activities such as repair of household equipment or motor vehicles. Businesses engaged in retail trade include department stores or other shops, motor vehicle retailers and service outlets, stalls, mail order houses, hawkers, door-to-door sellers, milk vendors, vending machine operators and consumer co-operatives. Units mainly selling goods on a commission basis to final consumers for personal or household consumption are included.
