This Class consists of units mainly engaged in providing long-term care accommodation or homes for senior citizens where nursing or medical care is not provided as a major service. Low-level care facilities, commonly called "hostels", are suitable for mobile people who may require assistance with personal hygiene, dressing, laundry, cooking, shopping or the supervision of medication. However, while hostels predominantly provide low-level care, many hostels also provide some high-level care (refer below), often to allow residents to stay in the same facility as their care needs increase. Nursing homes, or high-level care nursing facilities, provide 24 hour nursing care for residents and are staffed by registered and enrolled nurses, nursing assistant or personal care assistants. Generally, these facilities are most suitable for a person in the later stages of dementia, or for those with dementia who also have other medical conditions. Specific dementia units are small units designed specifically for people with dementia and can be classified as either high or low level care, depending on the degree of care provided. Not all people with dementia require a specific dementia unit. People with special care needs, such as those who may not be safely accommodated in general residential facilities, are best suited to these units. However, while nursing homes predominantly provide high-level care, many nursing homes also provide some low-level care.
