The Indonesian Institute of Sciences (LIPI) noted that there was an increase in online shopping activities during the 2020 Large-Scale Social Restrictions (PSBB), from 1-5 times a month to 1-10 times a month, with 96% of people's online shopping results being wrapped in plastic. . Meanwhile, medical waste has increased by around 30-50% from the pre-pandemic period.
This increase in the number of new types of waste certainly adds to the long list of waste problems in Indonesia. This is because Indonesia holds the record as the second largest contributor to plastic waste in the ocean after China, and the second largest contributor to food waste in the world after Saudi Arabia.
Around 70% of plastic waste or about 4.8 million tons is estimated to be unmanaged every year in Indonesia. These figures threaten to achieve Indonesia's target of 100% waste management, consisting of 30% waste reduction and 70% waste management, by 2025.
