Shoe Shopping in Indonesia Rp.115,000 per Capita: May 2011

Shoe shopping in Indonesia this year is estimated at Rp.115,000 per capita. That number is increased compared to last year's Rp.106,000 per capita. Data from Association of Indonesian footwear (Aprisindo) shows, the domestic shoe market at this year's projected increase of 30% from 2010, from Rp.25 trillion to Rp.27 trillion.

Shoe sales in the domestic market this year is estimated to be constrained due to competition with cheap imports from China. Surge in imports occurred due to the implementation of ACFTA; as many as 90% of footwear imports into Indonesia from China. Many types of footwear imported into Indonesia are a plastic shoes and school shoes for middle to lower segments.

Public interest in Chinese products, especially because the price is relatively cheap, local plastic shoes sold at Rp.14.000 - Rp.30.000, while the plastic shoes from China only Rp.7.000 per pair. Footwear Association data shows, the share of footwear imports from China are estimated to reach 50-60% of the total footwear market Indonesia. The government must respond to import surges with the right strategy to protect the national shoe industry.

The import of footwear from China in May 2010 has significantly risen. Based on the data of the Surveyor Board of Cargo Port managed by the Ministry of Trade, footwear import in May 2010 reached US$ 13.226 million. In comparison, in April 2010, the figure stood at US$ 8.776 million. Furthermore, during the period of January to March 2010, import rose by 22 percent. It is projected that import activities will continue to rise throughout the year. The increase in import is a byproduct of the implementation of free trade agreement between ASEAN countries with China. Presently, 90 percent of footwear import comes from China. The import is mostly plastic shoes and school shoes for middle to lower class segment.
