The government has accommodated business demand in the petrochemical sector to reduce the import duty polypropylene (PP) which was imported from MFN (Most Favorable Nations) from 15 percent to 10 percent according to the PMK No. Tariff Determination 19/PMK.011/2009 of import duty on Login items certain Imported Products. This is one way to enhance competitiveness in the domestic plastics industry.

Increase of import in plastic products is creating restlessness amongst local manufacturers. They have requested the government to implement mandatory national standard for plastic products. The implementation of the national standard will hopefully filter below standard products from the import market. The main purpose of the mandatory national standard implementation is to protect local industry from overeager import. Aside, the implementation of the regulation will also in away protect the people's health and the environment. Products that should be subjected to the regulation include sacks, pipes, basic materials of pipe and water tank.
