Rattan Industry Declines by 50 Percent: economy.okezone.com, 24 November 2008


The growth of ready-to-use rattan products industry continues to drop annually due to the fact that rattan basic material industry opts to export as opposed to supply domestic demands. The growth of rattan products in Indonesia has declined by 45 to 50 percent. Approximately 144 rattan downstream industry players closed down in 2007. Presently, only 300 continue to operate. For that reason, the association has asked that the government implement a ban or an export quota limit.

The export of furniture in Central Java was estimated to give a contribution of around 31 percent to national export. The export of furniture in Central Java reaches around 31 percent, which is worth US$ 450 million. Central Java's Provincial Government hopes to make Central Java the central of national furniture industry. In order to do this, guidance for the small and medium furniture industries need to be applied because until now, it adds up to 70 percent of the whole industry.
