The national leather industry, leather product and footwear exports are in the 5th place in the world and try to pursue China and Vietnam, each of which occupies the world's one and three positions. Head of Industrial Research and Development Agency of the Ministry of Industry, Ngakan Timur Antara said, Indonesia has a high competitiveness, so it needs to be maintained by improving the quality of design, raw materials and business sustainability, so as to pursue the countries on it. There are three factors that encourage industry to go forward, namely technology, capital, and skill, where the three factors must complement each other.

The national footwear industry sector has a market share of 4.4 percent in the international market. In fact, based on Trade Map data, export growth is positive from 4.85 billion US dollars in 2015 or rose 3.3 percent to 5.01 billion US dollars in 2016.

Realizing one mission, the City Government (Pemko) of Padangpanjang has developed policies for leather industry in accordance with the Medium Term Development Plan (RPJMD), ranging from leather tanning to finished goods.

Well received as evidence of the seriousness of the Ministry of Industry, stated performance Presidential Decree (Decree) number 28 of 2008 on the National Industrial policy. Padangpanjang, is the only city outside Java defined as the development of the leather industry nationwide.

To support policy development of the leather industry has been built leather craft centers, in collaboration with the Provincial Government (provincial) West Sumatra; at that location, will also be built as a center for tourism market sales leather products craft.
