In the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic that is still engulfing the world, Indonesian seaweed exports began to record positive performance cumulatively during the January-October 2021 period. This increase occurred due to increased demand from Indonesia's main trading partner, namely China. This increase is expected to continue to strengthen along with increasing public awareness of a healthy lifestyle. Seaweed as one of the raw materials for processed foods and pharmaceuticals is predicted to still have high demand.
A study by the Indonesia Eximbank Institute or IEB Institute noted that the export value of seaweed during the January-October 2021 period recorded an increase of 20.42% year on year (yoy) reaching US$ 177.99 million. The cumulative export value growth was also followed by growth in export volume by 11.68% year-on-year (yoy) to 159.59 thousand tons compared to the same period in 2020 of 142.90 thousand tons.

Minister of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Sakti Wahyu Trenggono inaugurated the modeling of seaweed cultivation covering an area of 51.25 hectares in Wakatobi Regency, Southeast Sulawesi. This program is part of a strategy to build a national downstream seaweed industry and improve the welfare of cultivating communities.
Referring to FAO 2022 data, Indonesia is the second largest seaweed producing country in the world with a production volume of 9.6 million tons. The main producer is China at 20.8 million tons. However, it has not been utilized optimally, so it is not yet a world exporter of downstream seaweed products.
