Tea Plantation Entrepreneurs Request Fertilizer Subsidy: www.mediaindonesia.com, 1 August 2008


As the national tea industry is presently in a dire situation, the government has been asked to implement a policy in regards to special subsidy for tea plantations. The current condition of the national tea industry is due to low selling price of Indonesian tea in the Jakarta Tea Auction. Since 1990, the price of Indonesia tea has been 40 percent lower than that of Sri Lanka.

The Department of Agriculture has budgeted Rp.9.981 billion for expansion and rejuvenation of coffee plantations in Indonesia. This step is taken to boost productions. The Arabica coffee plantations will receive Rp.9.239 billion, whilst Robusta will receive Rp.742 million. Arabica coffee has a higher value in the market, hence the higher amount of budgeting for expansion and rejuvenation.
