Fruit Import Exceeds Local Fruit Exports: https://manado.tribunnews.com/2018/10/22/nilai-impor-buah-melewati-ekspor-buah-lokal?page=3,/22 October 2018
Government efforts to reduce fruit imports have not been successful. The value of Indonesian fruit imports until the third quarter of 2018 recorded a significant increase. While in the same period, fruit exports from Indonesia actually declined. Data from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS), the value of fruit imports from January to September 2018 was US$ 908.5 million, up 11.5% compared to the same period in 2017 which was US$ 814.8 million. Meanwhile, the value of fruit exports actually dropped to around US$ 587.1 million, down 10.27% compared to the same period in 2017 which amounted to US$ 654.36 million.
The Chairperson of the Indonesian Vegetable and Fruit Exporters Association (AESBI) Hasan Johnny Widjaja said that the increase in fruit imports occurred because Indonesian people preferred imported fruits rather than local fruits because the development of imported fruit varieties was higher than domestic fruit products. The potential of local fruit is large, but it is not developed in the concept of integrated areas so that its production and exports cannot increase significantly. Without integrated area development, Indonesia's fruit harvest tends to be unstable and does not change much from year to year.
