Minister Say Sanyo Set Increase Investment in Indonesia

Despite reports saying that Sanyo plans to dismiss approximately 10,000 of its employees worldwide due to US$ 1.55 billion loss in 2004, Sanyo Co. plans to invest more in Indonesia and has set aside US$ 20 million for expansion. Sanyo plans to expand its business in Indonesia, as demand for its product here remains high despite emerging new players in the industry. Sanyo Indonesian units are PT Sanyo Electronics Indonesia, PT Sanyo Indonesia, PT Sanyo Jaya Components Indonesia and PT Sanyo Energy Indonesia. All four companies, employing a total of 10,450 workers, plan to increase their production capacity in accordance to demands.

In regards to Sanyo Electric’s plan to lay off 10,000 employees in the next few years, Sanyo is also considering to close its factories in China and Indonesia. Despite the news, according to the Indonesian Ministry of Industry, Sanyo will not close its factories in Indonesia. Instead, Sanyo plans to increase production from 4 million units to 8 million units.
