Newmont to Submit New Water Sample

PT Newmont Minahasa Raya’s request to take a new sample of water from Buyat Bay to be submitted as additional evidence in a pollution case being heard by the court. It believes that the additional sample will prove that there is no pollution in the bay. The company has been charged under the 1997 Environmental Law for the company’s allegedly environmentally harmful operations, including dumping its waste into the bay using the submarine tailings disposal method. The government has filed lawsuits and criminal charges against the company. The company settled the civil lawsuit with an out of court settlement earlier this year reportedly worth US$ 30 million.
Newmont Bids Minahasa Farewell, Offers US$ 15 Million

PT Newmont Minahasa Raya (NMR) provided a fund of US$ 15 million for environmental protection and community development activities following the closure of its gold mine in Ratatotok subdistrict, Minahasa, North Sulawesi. The post mine activities itself was commenced in August 2004 and will end in 2007. After the activities are completed, a team of expert will come to the site for an evaluation concerning the reclamation and rehabilitation of the land affected by gold mining and production activities. NMR started operating in Ratatotok in 1996 and ended them in October 2001. The reserve gold core processing was shut down on 31 August 2004 due to depleting resources. During the 8 years that it operated, the company extracted 60 million grams of gold and paid US$ 104 million in taxes and royalties.
