Yamaha Shifts Suzuki in Second Place, Motorcycle Production in May Increased 35.7%
Bisnis Indonesia, page T8, 2005-06-22
The production of motorcycles nationally this May increased 35.7% to 421,272 units from 310,418 units compared to production in May 2004. For the first five months of 2005, the total production reached 1.98 million, or an increase of 33.4% compared to the same period in 2004. From the 6 manufacturers that are members to the Association of Indonesian Motorcycle Industry, Honda had the largest production volume (220,140 units). For that reson, Honda still hold the number one position by dominating 52.47% of the market share. Yamaha holds the second place with a production volume of 105,700 units, which shifts Suzuki with its production volume of 86,879 units to the third place. According to Suzuki’s distributor, PT Indomobil Niaga International Tbk, the Suzuki’s decreasing production was due to the fact that its production activity was temporarily halted for a week at the beginning of May. At that time, the company was running a maintenance program for its machineries. Meanwhile, Yamaha’s success was due to the large demand for four strokes motorcycles, especially Jupiter Z and Vega R (which contributed 70% to Yamaha’s total sales).
