BRIN through the Legal Research Center (PRH) held a webinar that focused on discussing research findings on tropical peat land restoration in Indonesia from a social, legal, and ecological perspective, Wednesday (12/10). This activity discusses peat restoration which is Indonesia's commitment to prevent forest and land fires, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Head of the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Organization (OR IPSH), Ahmad Najib Burhani, said that most of the country's emissions come from deforestation and land use change. This includes the clearing of peat lands for oil palm and mangrove plantations for shrimp and fish ponds.

"Indonesia is home to more than a third of the world's tropical peat lands, half of which have been converted through drainage, deforestation and agriculture-related burning," said Najib. Indonesia has pledged to restore more than 2 million hectares of degraded peat land by 2016-2020 under the Peat land Restoration Agency (BRG) and 1.5 million hectares of degraded peat land by 2020-2024 under the Peat and Mangrove Restoration Agency (BRGM).

Peat land restoration is a complex issue, not only related to biophysical restoration through wetting and revegetation, but also a social dimension because many people live and depend on peat lands for their livelihoods. "Putting people first is an important part of the equation to protect and restore Indonesia's vast tropical peat lands," said Najib. He emphasized that without the commitment of the people on peat lands and other stakeholders, the government, civil society, NGOs, academics, we cannot restore peat lands in a sustainable manner.

The government has restored 209,977 hectares of peat in Riau during the 2016-2022 period with various activities. These include the construction of 1,618 canal blocking units, revegetating 140 hectares of peat, and providing 86 community livelihood revitalization packages.

Peat restoration is an effort to restore degraded peat ecosystems so that their hydrological conditions, structure and function are restored. Moreover, peatlands can store carbon. This was conveyed by the Head of the Peat and Mangrove Restoration Agency (BRGM), Hartono in Pekanbaru, Riau.
