Director General of Minerals and Coal Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources Bambang Gatot Ariyono said, investment for the construction of domestic nickel refining facilities reached approximately US $ 5.03 billion or around Rp 68 trillion. The 13 nickel smelters already built and operating have already produced 598 thousand tonnes (FeNi and NPI) and 64 thousand tonnes of Ni-Matte, and able to purify nickel ore in domestic of 34 million tons. While for the last two years, two nickel smelters that stopped operating were caused by economic factors resulting from rising operating costs and weakening of mineral commodity prices in early 2017.

President Director of Aneka Tambang, Arie Prabowo Ariotedjo said that the company targets production and can sell 30,000 tons of nickel in ferronickel throughout 2019. The projection of nickel production until the end of 2018 is 25,000 tons. Until September 2018 it has produced 19,264 tons of nickel in ferronickel.
Arie expects that next year nickel prices will return to the level of US $ 15,000 per ton, where prices are currently at US $ 10,900 per ton. Currently ANTM is still exploring nickel at Pomalaa and Tapunopaka, Waylukum and also awaiting exploration mining business licenses to work on the nickel mining block in North Bahodopi, Morowali, Central Sulawesi and the nickel mining block in Matarape, Southeast Sulawesi. For next year, the company prepares capital expenditure of Rp 3.4 trillion, which is obtained from internal cash, which will be used to develop several ANTM projects.
