The government estimates that raw sugar consumption for industrial needs will reach 3.6 million tons next year. The projection is 6% higher compared to the consumption of raw sugar for industrial needs this year of 3.4 million tons. Director General of the Ministry of Industry's Agro Industry, Panggah Susanto said that the projected consumption growth is below the food beverage industry's projected growth of 7% - 8%.

National sugar needs throughout 2016 reached 5.7 million tons. Some 2.9 million tons are industrial needs. The remaining 2.8 million tons is community consumption. Sugar production in 2016 only reached 2.2 million tons. As many as 1.2 million tons of them are produced by state-owned enterprises, and the remaining 999,600 thousand tons are private production. This year, state-owned producers are targeted to produce 1.6 million tons of sugar.

Sugar demand in Indonesia reaches 5 million tons per year, but can only meet a maximum of 2.5 million tons per year. To meet domestic demand, the government is importing sugar from other countries.

"To meet the needs of nearly 50% of sugar that we are still importing from other countries such as Thailand, Australia, Brazil and other importing countries," said Production Director of PTPN 12 Suwarno.

According to him, in order to meet the needs of sugar in Indonesia, it encourages local farmers to grow sugar cane. "Instead of importing raw sugar the better if local farmers switched to plant cane," he said.
