Head of Regulatory Affairs, International Trade, and Communications PT HM Sampoerna Tbk Elvira said in the last five years, the average production of tobacco in the country was always below 200 thousand tons per year. Though demand ranges from 320 thousand tons per year. "That is, there is a shortage (shortage) of approximately 120 thousand tons of industrial demand by 320 thousand tons," he said in Jember, East Java, Saturday, July 30, 2016.

Based on data from the Ministry of Agriculture in 2014, the tobacco harvest reached 163 187 tonnes. While industrial demand each year to reach about 300 thousand tons. In fact, in Indonesia, there are approximately 550 thousand tobacco farmers. "As a result, Indonesia, which is also the state cigarette producer in the world, forced to import tobacco from abroad," he said.

According to Elvira, insufficient supply of tobacco is motivated by several factors, including a lack of capital, traditional farming techniques are inefficient, lack of technical support and agricultural infrastructure, and lack of direct market access by farmers that benefit is reduced.

Elvira says the key to improving the productivity of tobacco is increasing human resources, network of business partnerships, and increasing competitiveness. One of them through a partnership program with tobacco farmers.
