This industry consists of firms that supply district energy for heating and/or cooling. Typically, firms reticulate hot and cold water or steam via closed mains systems to commercial or residential buildings. The water or steam itself is not consumed; rather customers extract its heating or cooling value. The official industry definition excludes firms whose main activity revolves around the generation and/or transmission of electricity and who supply district energy as a minor associated activity. Rather, it includes the revenue generated from the supply of district energy by these co-generators (so called because they produce both electricity and heat) with the electricity sector, where it represents only a very minor share of the total (less than one per cent). However, it is not only very significant in terms of the total supply of district heating and cooling, but is also the major area of growth in that supply.
