Violates Anti-Monopoly Law

The Business Competition Supervisory Committee has decided to reinvestigate the cinema monopoly, foreign movie import and distribution done by Subentra Group before making decisions in regards to 21 Cineplex’s fate. Subentra Group is considered to have violated Law No. 5/1999 concerning probition to monopolize a field of business. The monopoly done by Subentra Group, as the owner of 21 Cineplex, has caused the performance of second class movie theatres and domestic film industry to decline. This is due to the fact that second class theatres must wait for a film to retire from 21’s screens before showing it on their screens. Not to forget, high import of foreign film decreased viewers’ interest for domestically-made films. Subentra holds 58 percent of the Indonesian movie theatre market share. According to investigation done by the committee in July 2002, 102 out of 178 movie theatres were owned by Subentra Group. Up to February 2003, the number rose to 109 out of 185, especially after the 21 cineplex network also took over the Djakarta Theatre and Cilandak Town Square movie theatre. Subentra Group has two subsidiaries to handle its affairs: PT Camila Internusa as the film distributor and PT Satria Perkasa as handler of the theatres’ management.

The 21 cineplex network now offers “The Premiere”, a service which provides a more exclusive athmosphere for its customers. The service make it unnecessary for customers to queue for tickets. Instead, they just sit down in provided seats and wait for ticket sellers to come to them. The Premiere offers a 38-seat capacity theatre, or a more spacious theatre for its patrons. The patrons’ seats are also more spacious and equipped with tables for snacks and drinks. 21 Cineplex aims to sell a special atmosphere with the “The Premiere”. To acquire access to this facility, customers need to pay Rp 100,000 per person.
