Microsoft Exec Says Lack of English Impedes IT Industry: The Jakarta Post, 5 May 2006, page 5 As English mastery among business people in Indonesia is still below adequate, it impedes the development of IT-based applications in Indonesia, especially due to the fact that English is the international language of business. Indonesia was losing out on IT business because competitors from India, Malaysia and Singapore not only had better English mastery, but also have better developed IT infrastructures in their countries. In addition, personal computer penetration in Indonesia remained low. In Java, the most densely populated island, one personal computer is used by 847 students, while in the outer island, one computer may be used by 1,900 students. For that reason, PT Microsoft Indonesia and ITB launched the innovation centre to provide research and development facilities for software solutions. The project involves government officials, academics and business people.
