Does `Takdir Ilahi' Exploit Fear in its Righteous Mission ?
The Jakarta Post, 2005-02-25
Previously, Televisi Pendidikan Indonesia (TPI) has been airing religion-inspired soap Rahasia Ilahi, the plots of which are all based on true stories. Rahasia Ilahi’s success includes the achievement of high ratings and being recognized for weeks as the top drama program, something rare for religious TV shows. TPI now re-cooperates with Kusuma Esa Permata (KEP) to launch another religious TV drama. This time, it is titled Takdir Ilahi (Divine Fate). There is no doubt that high ratings equate to a large amount of profits for the station and the production house, but TPI publicly claimed that it was more than just profit that they were seeking. The show is a part of TPI’s commitments to present programs that do not merely entertain but also contains strong messages about virtue, truth and religious values for its audience.
TPI was first broadcasted in the 1980’s and was designed by its founders to provide educational programs. During its long existence, however, TPI became a second-rate station that targeted audiences in the middle- to lower-income social class. Its shows were dominated with dangdut music shows and low-budget entertainment packages. Rahasia Ilahi’s success, however, has been called a turning point in reclaiming its former image.
